ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Both director and historian, Patrick Nagatani was a sorcerer of stories. The Albuquerque-based photographer and teacher conjured universes on canvas, collaging photography. The book is edited with great style by Michele M. Penhall. This distinctive monograph designed by Christopher Kaltenbach is the first publication to survey the major photographic campaigns Patrick Nagatani (b. ) has completed during his long and still unfolding career.

The effects of the nuclear age became a major, career-spanning theme for Patrick—born a sansei, or third-generation Japanese-American—first appearing in his studio-based collaboration with painter Andrée Tracey, the “Nagatani-Tracey Collaboration,” in which the artists created wild tableaus of invented nuclear episodes in the U.S. using layered objects and photographs in front of. Two earlier monographs include Patrick Nagatani/Andrée Tracey Polaroid 20 x 24 Photographs , (Tokyo: Gallery Min, ), andNuclear Enchantment, (Albuquerque: UNM Press, ) which received the Kraszna-Krausz Book Award.

Numerous books have featured his work including Nuclear Enchantment () and Patrick Nagatani and Andrée Tracey (), Seizing the Light: A History of Photography by Robert Hirsch (), and Photography by Barbara London and John Upton (). For Nick Nagatani, the Vietnam War marked a long, difficult and reflective journey to understand life, war, politics and the role of the U.S. in our lives. Furthermore as an Asian American serving in the U.S. military his experiences during the war would shape and provide the foundations for the social justice and revolutionary work that he is.
